How do you decorate your tree? Is it meaningful to you?

Even as an atheist, my family’s Christmas has just one moment of true, pure emotion and love. That moment is decorating the tree. You see, you won’t find a single colored metal bulb on our tree. Every single ornament is a souvenir or a memento. We don’t use tinsel. We don’t have a big fancy star (the star is actually very old, and quite boring, but like hell we’re going to retire it).

Instead, I remember when and why my family got every single Christmas ornament. There’s one for my first birthday, one from a trip to Disneyland we took long ago, etc. Too many memories to name.

We couldn’t imagine having a tree that looks like the cover of a Christmas catalog. It just wouldn’t be complete without Joseph Marley, the Scarecrow, Bugs Bunny, and the picture of me when I was two years old. The lights are for effect, and even though this isn’t intentional, seeing them blink on and off in a totally uncoordianted fashion evokes Christmas memories.

What goes on your tree?

Awww… that sounds a lot like ours. Every year my two older brothers and I get an ornament on Christmas eve, of something we’ve done or liked during the year. We have discs from Disney World (Because of this I laughed when you mentioned Disney Land), three Pikachus from the year we actually memorized several Pokemon episodes, and many homemade ornaments from when we were younger. I love decorating the tree because it’s fun to remember why we have all these ornaments. Oh and it’s even more fun to turn the lights on because for years we’ve had a rocket ornament that counts down and Santa playing pinball. It reminds me of all the times on Christmas morning I’ve heard those sounds and known that in a few minutes we could all go out to the tree and exchange presents. Oh and my brother has a glass pickle. I don’t think anyone remembers why. X3
Thank you for giving me the chance to share this.
