I like to bring gifts to a party. Whether it’s a crawdad-sucking shrimp boil, a casual barbecue, or a catered Christmas formal, I like to bring a small gift. I can’t help myself. Once I learned how to do it, I couldn’t stop. I know it’s perceived as southern (which I’m not), antiquated (which I’m definitely not), and formal (again, so not). But really, it’s such a simple thing to do. It’s easy, and it’s an earnest way to say ‘thank you for including me’ without being dorky. But most importantly, it reminds me that I am a guest and not an entitled twit gracing someone else’s home with my presence.

If you aren’t accustomed to bringing gifts and you don’t have a clue what to bring, here are 9 ways to “bring it” to a party.

  1. I’m into wine so I feel very comfortable bringing a well-chosen bottle. If your host is serving alcohol I find that bringing wine is a great icebreaker. Don’t worry about price or ratings. Bring what you like, and remember it’s a gift. Let the host decide whether to open it or save it for his private enjoyment.
  2. If it’s a casual affair, ask if you can bring an appetizer. Something easy to prepare and delicious. You can even pick up ready-made plates from a deli, like shrimp dip, fresh shrimp cocktails, stuffed mini-belles, spinach dip, or deviled eggs.
  3. Buy a bread machine and learn to make flavored pizza doughs and breads. The machine does all the work, and you’ll still be considered amazing. Just toss the bread ingredients into the machine and push a button-an hour later you’ll have dough that you can freeze or bake into homemade mini-breads or breadsticks. Variations are easy and endless-toss in sundried tomatoes and wilted, chopped spinach; pressed garlic; caramelized onions; saffron and curry spices; truffle oil; or chopped herbs.
  4. If it’s an outdoor party, bring a lawn game like bocce or croquet. (Clear it with your host first, though.) Don’t be uptight about rules, and be willing to let the group invent their own version, like ‘cocktail croquet’ or ‘cutthroat croquet’.
  5. Small treats for the barbecue, like spicy peanut-sauced prawns, Trinidad asparagus (marinated in orange juice, lemon zest and garlic powder), ready-to-grill cheese sandwiches on crusty bread with caramelized onions, or bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with almonds or cream cheese.
  6. If you know your host’s musical tastes, bring a gift CD of a new artist, classic root, or unusual group in a similar vein.
  7. Flowers–a bright, splashy bouquet. Always available and always appreciated. Or a potted herb plant-basil, oregano and rosemary are kitchen favorites.
  8. Baked goods. Chocolate. Brownies! Yeah, brownies!
  9. A framed photograph. If you know your host well and have some great snaps of past events, pop one in a frame and bring it as a gift. If you’re a shutterbug, load up on frames when they’re on sale-photo mementos make great gifts for parties and holidays.

Obviously the Disney suits gave more than two figs about the legacy from the first Beast film, as they reassembled the former cast and spent some cash on production and tune-smithing for this straight-to-video effort. The events unfold between the time in the first film where Belle bartered herself to the Beast and her later return to the village to save her father. So the Beast’s heart still hasn…

The Bells of St. Mary’s works much better for its battle of wills between a parish priest and a head nun than the dopey musical interludes that pepper it, but Bells is still a winning, emotionally satisfying film.
