How can I cry softly on stage (no real tears necessary)?
Hey everyone! My drama group is putting on a performance of A Christmas Carole, and I am playing Belle. In the script it says that I am supposed to cry softly, but I can’t just burst in to tears because I still need to be able to recover quickly so I can talk. Do you have any tips (besides “think of something sad”) for making it look like I’m trying to hold back tears without actually having to start crying uncontrollably? Stuff like breathing techniques would help a ton. Thanks!

* Pinch your face as though you’re crying. (I don’t mean use your fingers, I mean, tighten up your face like it looks when you cry.)
* Put your head down, and if you can manage it use a hankie or something (as though you’re wiping tears/your nose).
* Quickly flex & release your stomach muscles, it will make it look like you’re shaking with sobbing.
* Every once in a while emit a loud gasp as you inhale, as though you’re out of breath from crying, as happens.
