Is there any specific reason why no television network broadcasts Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix?

Are networks not able to show it legally or something? I don’t see why they wouldn’t. Does the production company have to release some kind of right? I have no clue on how such matters work. I was spurred onto this question when I started watching ABC Family’s 23 Days of Christmas featuring Harry Potter films 1-4. I really wanted to watch 5, and I’m too frugal to buy it.

Usually networks don’t show movies that have been recently released. Harry Potter 5 was released on DVD a year ago. That seems like a while, but production companies don’t want TV showings to take away from DVD sales.

Also, in general basic cable is the last to show a movie. First, it will be shown on PPV and premium cable. Then, it will be shown on major networks. Lastly, it will be shown on basic cable. Movies don’t necessarily hit every kind of channel like that, but very popular movies do.

They may be saving the world broadcast premiere of Harry Potter 5 for next summer before the new movie comes out. They do this a lot, to build up enthusiasm.
