So..
I am having a baby in a few months. The other day, my mother-in-law asked me if I would like to look at baptism gowns. I told her that we are not getting the child baptized. She looked confused, so I told her that we are raising the child as an atheist, since neither me nor my husband believe in god, and would be lying to our child were we to tell him otherwise.
I cannot describe the look of revulsion and hatred that showed on her face. She told me I’d be ‘raising this baby for the devil”, and when I told her that no, I was actually raising my baby to use his head and was choosing not to indoctrinated my baby, and that he could choose to believe in god or not when he was old enough to make an informed decision, she hung up.
Has anyone else ever had a problem with this? I mean, I have no problem with getting together with her family for Christmas, Easter, etc because I think that is nice ‘family’ time, the child just will not attend church with them. Any advice?

Your mother in law may abide by your wishes to not take your child to church, but she’s rarely going to miss an opportunity to oppose you on that issue (and very vocally I might add). Personally, I grew up Christian and I still am, but I am not a part of the church organization that I grew up in and that pissed off a lot of people. Still, I live my life my way and tune everyone else out. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and worship (or not worship) in their own way and that includes you too. You will probably not be able to get your mother in law to see this, but know this for yourself.
To be angrily opposed in front of your child will make them all the more curious to try it out, so be forewarned and keep your cool.
Whatever way you would like to raise your child, do it and enforce boundaries as best as you can.
